EXP2, Week 1 Task: Concepts and Axonometrics
Clients:
- Herzog and De Meuron- Walter Gropius
Concepts drawn from these architects work:
Gropius:
- Form following function; the design does not extend beyond supporting the functionality.
- Design is structured around specific simple geometry, often conventional prisms.
- Bauhaus design tends towards minimalism in every aspect and the strict exclusion of decoration.
- An air of mathematical organisation to them.
- Avoidance of the obstruction of his facades, favouring a blank, open surface.
Herzog and De Meuron:
- Experimental but not extreme.
- Emphasis on material influences on the building envelope.
- Patterns and geometric consistency is a recurring theme.
- Often use edges creating an angular feel.
- Still follows functionality in form, but more complex than bauhaus.
