EXP2, Week 1 Task: Concepts and Axonometrics

Clients:

- Herzog and De Meuron
- Walter Gropius

Concepts drawn from these architects work:

Gropius:
  1. Form following function; the design does not extend beyond supporting the functionality.
  2. Design is structured around specific simple geometry, often conventional prisms.
  3. Bauhaus design tends towards minimalism in every aspect and the strict exclusion of decoration.
  4. An air of mathematical organisation to them.
  5. Avoidance of the obstruction of his facades, favouring a blank, open surface.

Herzog and De Meuron:
  1. Experimental but not extreme.
  2. Emphasis on material influences on the building envelope.
  3. Patterns and geometric consistency is a recurring theme.
  4. Often use edges creating an angular feel.
  5. Still follows functionality in form, but more complex than bauhaus.
